We are pleased to announce the winners of the Bead & Jewellery competition which was shown at the 2011 Flame Off in Towcester

The winners are

Beads:

Advanced Winner – Sue Webb with “Juggling Elephant”

Bead Heros
Juggling Elephant – a Lampwork bead inspired by Sharon Peters
I love the humour that Sharon Peters manages to instill in her beads and cartoon clarity they possess. I like to make use of the hole left in the beads if it is not being used in a piece of jewellery. This is a very clever circus elephant who has learnt to juggle.
www.suewebb.co.uk

Advanced Runner-up – Emma Mackintosh with “Water Dragon”

Theme: Fire & Ice
“Water Dragon”
I love making dragons, which are by nature fiery. As fire and ice are opposites, I decided to make a water dragon that breathes ice. This dragon curls around the necklace as a freeform bead, surrounded by ice cubes.
www.aflamewithdesire.co.uk

Intermediate Winner – Ingrid Brunt with “Cats in Hats”

Theme: Bead Heroes
“Cats in Hats”
My bead hero is Lesley Nixon. She set a challenge to have a go at cat beads, one of her signature styles.
In doing this she gave me the courage and approval to copy her style and develop my own style of cats.
www.bruntiesbeads.com

Intermediate Runner-up – Dawn Price with “Pegasus”

<a href="http://www.dawnsbeadboutique.co.uk/"target="_blank">www.dawnsbeadboutique.co.uk/

Theme: Bead Heroes
“Pegasus”
My bead is ‘Pegasus’, shown about to take to the sky. Created in Effetre and D. Helix with a drop of silver. Measures 35mm x 27mm x 10mm, excluding bail.

Beginner Winner – Judith Hannington with “Troglodyte”

Theme: Bead Heros
“Troglodyte”
Inspired by Miriam Steger-Van Der Schrieck’s faceted window beads, I wanted to create a similar effect without cold-working techniques. My ‘Troglodyte’ bead is the result. My own handmade vine and murrini canes form the wrapped core and flower centre, and the window has a silvered ivory stringer frame.
www.fuse-n-beads.co.uk

Beginner runner-up – Jean Munro

Theme: Fire & Ice
4 ss lentils size approx 25mm and 2 18mm ss lentils. The glass used is CiM Marshmallow, Effetre Caribbean Sea, Effetre Blue Lagoon, handmade sistringer and handmade twistie in the 3 colours.
I was aiming for the effect of a swirly sea with ice forming on the surface gradually increasing with the sea reducing as the ice forms.
www.ceardannan.co.uk

Jewellery:

Seed Bead Category Winner – Lynn Davy with “Molten”

Theme: Fire
“Molten”
Flame themed lampwork set by Tania Grey, strung with charcoal-black seed beads and ‘lava’ beads interspersed with beaded beads and finished with a beadwoven toggle-and-loop clasp and a lush tassel. The piece is charred black at the ends and gets hotter and more glowing at the centre.
http://www.etsy.com/shop/nemeton

Seed Bead Category Runner-up – Vanessa Hearn with “Lava”

Theme: Fire & Ice
‘Lava’
Hot beaded bubbles of lava, from the furnace of the planet, capture beads from my flame. (Beads and Beadwork by Vanessa Hearn)
http://www.beadupastorm.co.uk

Wire work Category Winner – Gay Massender

Theme: Fire
I took inspiration for this piece from the Catherine Wheel, still clinging to my garden fence. I’ve used reclaimed electrical copper wire and my own lampwork beads. I’ve tried to add depth and the illusion of sparks flying from the main focal point – fire works!
http://www.GaysieMay.etsy.com

Wire work Category Runner-up – Judy Munford with “Fire Cracker Flame Off”

Theme: Fire
“Fire Cracker Flame Off”
Featuring a focal glass bead by Dianne Cracknell, wire flames with crystal tips creep around the central fire, finished with hand-dyed silk ribbon – flaming up with crystals!
http://www.doodlecraft.com

Strung Jewellery Category Winner – Anna Hayward with “Flickering Flames”

Theme: Fire
“Flickering Flames”

to be held at the Flame Off, Towcester Racecourse April 2011

We are delighted to announce that GBUK will be holding another Bead competition at next years Flame Off event at Towcester Racecourse. This is an exciting opportunity for GBUK members to showcase their work in a display on the GBUK stand, and which can then be displayed at later bead/glass events.

This year there will also be a NEW Jewellery category in the competition, which is open to members as well as non-members to enter. We are hoping that this will highlight our work to beaders and jewellery makers including those who may not have used artisan glass beads before. The piece must include a focal or set of artisan lampwork beads, and can be used with seed beads, bead weaving, wire-work, forged/formed metal, mixed media, for example.
GBUK members can therefore enter a bead as well as/or a piece of jewellery if they would like to!

There will be two themes:

Fire & Ice – e.g. Fire/Flames and / or Ice
Bead Heros – this theme is about being inspired by another artist’s work, be it a beadmaker or glassworker. Entries should NOT be a copy of their work but a piece that has been inspired by or a development of what they have made, said or their methods used. Entrants will need to detail this in the comments section.

There are three categories for the Lampworked Bead Competition – Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner, with a Winner and Runner-Up for each category.
The Jewellery Competition will have a Winner and Runner-Up.

Please see the attached PDF for the entry form and rules.

The Judges and prizes have yet to be announced…but we wanted to give everyone as much notice as we could for entering!

Note: The deadline has been extended to 31st March 2011

Download the Entry form here
