Bead Competition

Beginner

Winner: Elena Fleury-Rojo
Theme: Fauna
One pair of bird glass beads with mixed filigrana glass bodies with Double Helix wings hanging on silver plated wire and earring hooks.

Elena Fleury-Rojo

Intermediate

Winner: Judith Hannington
Theme: Fauna
Animal beads have become a recent obsession of mine both for jewellery making purposes and for their pure visual delight. My scene evolved with the latter specifically in mind hence working on the end of a mandrel for some of the elements to eliminate one bead hole.

"Woodland Scene" by Judith Hannington

Runner Up: Laney Mead
Theme: Fauna
Fauna is the ancient Roman Goddess of Prophecy and Fruitfulness, the wild and untamed. She is the wife or sister (accounts differ) of Faunus, her name is used to refer to the animal kingdom. Fauna is depicted with the body of a goat.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-831" title="LaneyMead_21.2.12 004_web" src="http://www.gbuk.org/pages/wp-content/uploads/LaneyMead_21.2.12-004_web-117x300.jpg" alt=""Fauna, ancient Roman Goddess.
Advanced

Winner: Ingrid Brunt
Theme: Curiosity
Starting with the chicken bead, a medium spacer then small spacer, descending to a girls head. Next a small spacer, then medium spacer ascending up to the egg bead. Made on a Hot Head.
The girl’s curious about the question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”

"Which came first?" by Ingrid Brunt

Runner Up: Sue Webb
Theme: Curiosity
An exotic bird and her chick survey a snack.

"But will it taste nice?" by Sue Webb

Off Loom Weaving

Winner: Lynn Davy
Theme: Fauna
A variety of beadwoven components combined with lampwork beads (by Sally Carver, Emma Ralph, Becky Fairclough & Lesley Macintosh) in a fantasy necklace that might be found adorning a mermaid in a rockpool…

"Rockpool Fauna" by Lynn Davy

Runner Up: Edwige Jenei
The owl and the pussycat are made by Marlene Minhas. I chose it because it’s my favourite rhyme. The boat is in rightangle weave and the sea is herringbone.

"The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edwige Jenei

Stringing

Winner: Gay Massender
When I think of ‘fauna’, birds especially spring to mind. I have been exploring and adapting a range of newly learned techniques and ‘Juno’s Friend’ is one of the recent results. I chose a limited palette to give the piece cohesion and wearability – but exploration into colour awaits…

"Juno’s Friend" by Gay Massender

The time has come to vote for a new GBUK committee. This year we only have one nominee for each [...]

The time has come to vote for a new GBUK committee. This year we only have one nominee for each of the positions.

Each has given a short statement to assist you in your decision and your options are to vote for, against or abstain.

All you need to do is read the statements then click on the big link at the bottom of this post and follow the instructions.

Candidate for Chairman – Scarlet Leonard

Over the past three years I have been lampworking I have grown with the community developing my skills through inspiration and guidance of more senior lampworkers. I have spent the past year taking those skills to turn into my own personal style of bead making focusing on colour then form.

As I develop personally I feel that it is time I bought something to the community in return for everything they have done for me and others. While I am not yet in a position to bring innovation to lampworking I have a range of marketing skills, organisation and time to dedicate to raising the profile of lampwork beads to the general public.

Without the support of GBUK I wouldn’t be in the position I am now and I would hope that in years to come more and more lampworkers would be able to say the same thing.

Candidate for Vice Chairman – Jo Turner

Having spent time developing my own business in bead-making, I have a commitment and a vested interest in promoting glass bead-making in general, and in the UK specifically. I am hugely enthusiastic about flame-working and have a wealth of experience, gained in industry and working with schools and charities, that I could bring to a role supporting the activities of the GBUK.

I had an active role as a trust co-ordinator for four years, which relied on excellent communication skills, for a registered charity. Some of my duties as a Trust co-ordinator, in addition to supporting members, entailed representing the Trust at events by way of giving presentations, building links with external institutions and providing the trust with reports.

I set up and ran a Global networking group for one of the major pharmaceutical giants for five years, which relied on communication and co-ordination skills. I believe the experience gained during the course of those activities can be applied to many areas of the GBUK activities but would specifically be of the most value for a role as Deputy Chairman.

Candidate for Treasurer – Pauline Holt

I was one of the 7 founder members of GBUK and held the post of treasurer for many years. Up until 2 years ago when I retired I worked as a finance Manager for several blue chip companies, I had responsibility for millions of pounds (approx.. 65 million per month). Those companies included Glaxo Smithklien, ABN Amro Bank and TKMaxx. Therefore I am used to preparing accurate reports and reconciliations. I am honest and reliable.

Candidate for Secretary – Colette Ladley

Hi, my name is Colette Ladley and I started lampworking in 2006 when I chanced upon a local studio and bought my torch shortly afterwards. I work from home in my conservatory – which means I freeze in winter and boil in summer, but at least I don’t have to go outside! I love making sets and find the repetition improves my skills.

I would like to be secretary as I have always worked as an administrator and have all the skills that comes with that type of work. I have also been supporting the GBUK committee and attending the monthly calls for some time, which has given me plenty of insight into the tasks carried out by GBUK. I work part time as a school business manager so have the occasional afternoon free for my torch, as well as the school holidays of course - I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Candidate for Membership Secretary – June Scott

My name is June Scott. I am currently the Membership Secretary for GBUK and would like to continue in the post. I have been lampworking for approx 4 years and know a number of the GBUK members both personally and through lampworking forums. I am keen to see the GBUK continue to evolve and I feel I could contribute something towards that.

Candidate for Webmaster – Heather Kelley

I live in London and have been lampworking for two years. I joined GBUK at last year’s Flame Off and can generally be found on Frit-Happens (as Kalorlo). I’m a computer scientist and physicist by training and my day job involves keeping the content on the company website up to date and responding to online queries. I have my own website which I built and maintain – I’m familiar with keeping one’s modules up to date and checking for security fixes! I know CSS and can code in PHP. I know my way around photo editing and desktop publishing software. I love all things glassy and I think GBUK is important for raising the profile of what we do and how we do it.

Candidate for Newsletter/Journal Editor – Janine Starr

I joined the GBUK committee last year after being impressed with the committee’s desire to raise the profile of lampworking to a wider audience and to support those of us who are makers.

My background is in the adult education and community sectors where I have always been involved with writing and editing newsletters, designing brochures and posters for marketing campaigns and creating press releases for the local media.

As a relative ‘newbie’ to the lampworking world, I hope to bring a fresh eye to committee meetings and to ensure that those just starting out on the lampworking journey are able to access high quality information via the newsletter and to feel proud to have their work featured in the journal.

Candidate for marketing/Events Coordinator – Debbie Dew

My name is Debbie Dew, usually known as Debs. I am in my fifth year of lampworking and am a current member of GBUK. I know a number of members through bead fairs and lampworking lessons I’ve taken and of course, the yearly visits to Flame off.

Until January this year, I had been working in the Training Industry for 15 years, much of that time spent Co-ordinating and Managing projects/contracts. Part of this also included networking with external agencies and marketing our training delivery.

Now I am no longer going out to work, I have more time to devote to lampworking and feel my previous experiences would fit well with the role of Marketing/Events Co-ordinator.

VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED – The link has been removed.

Voting closes at Midnight on Tuesday April 3rd 2012. We will send out reminders in case you have forgotten, but please vote as soon as possible.
