GBUK Insurance

If you join the insurance scheme now it will cost you only £50.00 to insure  yourself until 31/5/2019

Working with flames has always been tricky. Most venues shy away from wanting them anywhere near – imagine how insurance companies are!

Most people use a specific craft insurer, there aren’t many of them, so GBUK decided to find a bespoke policy especially for flameworkers.

The policy has been arranged with G.M.Imber & Sons and covers:

 It will cover you for:

Working with flames

Demoing

Teaching

What makes this policy specific for flameworking is

AE 01 – Burning and Welding Condition

It is a condition to Insurer’s liability that the following special precautions will be complied with on each occasion of any work involving the use of blow lamps, blow torches, flame guns, hot air guns, electric gas or other welding equipment, or portable grinding equipment:

(i)  All blow lamps, blow torches and flame guns or hot air guns are to be lit in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, not left unattended when lit and extinguished immediately after use;

(ii)  The area in which the work is to be carried out (including adjoining shafts or openings and the area on the other side of any wall or partition) is to be inspected to establish whether any combustible material (other than the property to be worked upon) is in danger of ignition either directly or by conduction of heat;

(iii)  Wherever practicable, all combustible material is to be removed to a distance of not less than 10 metres from the point of work and such material which cannot be removed is to be covered by overlapping sheets of non-combustible material or afforded equivalent protection;

(iv)  Suitable fire extinguishing appliances are to be kept available for immediate use at the point of work;

(v)  All  portable  grinders  are  to  be  switched  on  and  used  in  strict  accordance  with  the  manufacturer’s instructions and switched off when unattended and immediately after use;

(vi)  Wherever practicable, gas cylinders not in use are to be kept outside the building in which the work is taking place or otherwise kept at least 15 metres from the point of work;

(vii)  Immediately following completion of each period of work and during the period of not less than thirty minutes following completion of each period of work, a thorough and continuous check that there is no fire or risk of fire is to be made of the whole area in which the work is to be carried out (including adjoining shafts or openings and the area on the other side of any wall or partition).

At first glance, this section is both just what we need but seemingly impossible to comply with.

Wherever practicable, all combustible material is to be removed to a distance of not less than 10 metres from the point of work and such material which cannot be removed is to be covered by overlapping sheets of non-combustible material or afforded equivalent protection.

Laney Mead – Beyond Beginners Class – September 2018

We are delighted to announce that Laney will be running a two day GBUK class at the Tuffnell Glass studio for a very special price to members.  Laney will be teaching on 29th & 30th September 2018

The Course

The first day will be spent creating simple heads and bodies, separately. We will concentrate on simple dogs and cats – there will be a chance to discuss other creatures.   These can be wired together to create a pendant/dangle at your leisure.  We will also talk about how to ‘see’ the bead before even lighting the torch by doodling the simple shapes and working out which pieces need to go in which order to prevent body parts from ‘popping’ off. Heat control is mastered when you make creature beads!    You will need a piece of paper/sketch book and either a pencil or a pen.  These are not works of art, at best they will look like scribbles but you will understand the scribbles!  Honest.

Day two will be a test of nerve as we put together everything we learnt the day before and create a complete creature in one piece.  We will discuss how to use the simple shapes we have now mastered to create new creatures simply by changing noses, ears etc,  If we have a chance we can play with gravity to create different poses – see Winthrope the Vulture and maybe add ‘friends’ like ladybugs and birds for the creatures to hold.

Win a one full day class with Elizabeth Welch (worth £195) on Thursday 31st May.

Elizabeth works with borosilicate glass and will be teaching you how to work with boro colours and how she creates her fantastic ocean creatures.

We would like you to write a tutorial or glass research article for Flame, our magazine.  Tutorials can be anything from “how to do a technique”, to a full-blown “make this bead” tutorial.  Glass research can be on the history of glass or some interesting glass related research.

Next up are two taster classes:

Choose Caroline of BlueberriBeads (worth £45) to learn about ceramic raku. This is a great chance to learn a new skill that maybe you haven’t thought about before.

You can choose either Friday or Saturday 10am – 1pm or 2pm – 5pm

Choose Floriane Lateille (worth £75) on Friday 10am – 1pm. You will learn how to make a rainbow twisty and then add it to a larger bead. Great for those wanting to learn tips and tricks or just to have a try.

For the taster classes, we’d like you to agree to tell us all about your day afterwards in the form of a small article with pictures.  This will be published either online and/or in Flame, our e-magazine.

GBUK Class with Jennie Lamb – One or Two day – Special Class Rates For GBUK members

We are delighted to announce that Jennie Lamb will be running a GBUK class at the Tuffnell Glass studio for a very special price to members
Jennie will be teaching on both 5th & 6th May 2018 and you have the option to book one day or both days.

Jennie Lamb

One of the reasons glass is my medium of choice is its ability to allow a depthof design which is not achievable in most other arts. It is this that keeps mefascinated and absorbed with melting glass. I had my first class in 2009 and have not looked back since and I now work with glass full time.I live on the coast in North Devon, UK on a tidal river estuary and close to the sea and, like a lot of artists, my work is heavily influenced by the ever changing landscapes and tides, the colours and foliage that the seasons bring.  It is the three dimensional quality of glass that really fascinates me. My Beads are award winning, one of a kind pieces. Each one is made with love and most are influenced by the coastal area I live and walk in.
